Important News and Opportunities

THE LSS HAS A NEW PATRON!!!

Since the fabulous Kirby J departed our august institution late last year to take up a post with the ANU College of Law, the LSS has been without a patron...

This sad state of affairs lingers no more...  Newly appointed High Court Chief Justice Robert French has accepted our invitation to be Patron of the ANU Law Students Society!  Photos of the "letter opening ceremony" (read: Paddy Mayoh, giddy as a schoolgirl, fussing over an envelope with a flashy stamp) will be posted to Facebook soon.  Rejoice!

Peppercorn Edition 2:

The second edition of Peppercorn for 2009 will be distributed this week!  An incredible 60 pages long, this issue focuses on legal issues and climate change.  Some would be forgiven that Peppercorn has itself confused with the ALR, but fear not!!...  The articles are entertaining as well as thought-provoking, and you're all encouraged to partake in the goodness.  Copies will be available from the Law Library, LSS Office, Law Common Room, and a number of lectures (with permission, of course)...

A big congrats to everyone involved, you've all done a smashing job and should be proud of the results.  Peppercorn to rescue Australian quality journalism from the depths of sensationalist inadequacy?  This lowly Admin VP thinks so.

Exam Tutorials:

With exams approaching the LSS has been bombarded with questions about the exam tutorials.  Dates and times for most of the tutorials are being finalised as we speak!  Expect an announcement in a few days, followed by facebook bombardment.  If you think you have the skills required for leading a tutorial, feel free to shoot James Dawson, Education VP at large, an email on lsseducation@anu.edu.au.

LS Card:

Don't know what the LS Discount card offers? From cheaper haircuts and travel to discounts on food, drinks and the most trendy clothes in Canberra, make sure you're getting the most out of your LS Discount Card. Check out all the deals at http://law.anu.edu.au/lss/card.html.

Calling all volunteers:

The ANU is very fortunate to be hosting the Australian Law Students Association October Council for 2009!!!  We're keen to get some volunteers on hand to help run council and seminars, as well as organise wicked social events that you and the delegates will get to enjoy.  If you're interested in helping out please email Chanelle on lssevents@anu.edu.au.

On that note, if anyone is interested in participating in the Decorations Committee (AKA DecCom) for the fantastic Law Ball '09, email Chanelle ASAP!  The next meeting is this Friday the 29th of May at 4pm in the Law Common Room.

2009 ALSA CONFERENCE

Brisbane, Queensland.  13th – 19th July.

The 31st Australian Law Students Association (ALSA) Conference will be held from the 13th – 19th July 2009.  This annual event is one of the largest student conferences in Australia, and the only conference of its kind for law students.  It is THE social event for all law students and is open to every Law Student Society member in Australia, New Zealand and South-east Asia.  Check out pictures from last year’s fantastic conference in Hobart at www.alsaconference2008.com.au

The 7 day event is jam packed with social activities, most of which come with food a drinks included.  Some of these are:

    • Opening Gala Dinner at the GABBA Cricket Ground
    • Closing Gala Dinner at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre
    • Cocktail Night at the Shadow Lounge
    • State of Origin Night at the Normanby Hotel
    • Theme Night
    • Pub Crawl
    • The national finals of the ALSA Legal Advocacy Competitions (with Supreme, Federal and High Court Justices acting as Judges)
    • Australian Legal Education Forums
    • Day trips to various exciting tourist destinations in South-East Queensland

Delegates can choose between accommodation and non-accommodation packages.

Delegates who choose the accommodation package will be staying at Oaks Charlotte and Festival Towers in the CBD.  These are luxurious two bedroom (four person) fully self contained apartments.  Each come with full kitchen and laundry facilities and their own balconies or enclosed patios.  Plus, each tower has a lap pool, gym and large outdoor common areas with BBQs and shading.

Every law student should go to at least one ALSA Conference before they graduate! It’s going to be AWESOME!

For more information visit www.alsaconference2009.com, or talk to the ALSA representative at your university’s law student society.  Enrollment opens 22 April so get cracking!
